Number1Gallery proudly presents “Obsessive Compulsive” , by Vasan sitthiket
One of Thailand’s most internationally recognized artists, Vasan Sitthiket returns to Number 1 Gallery for his latest solo exhibition Obsessive Compulsive. In his early fifties and with a career that spans almost three decades, the renegade artist has previously utilized painting, sculpture, ceramics, performance, installation, poetry, and music, in his crusade for equality in society.
For his latest painterly assault, Vasan continues with his creative campaign to halt the social and moral degradation being experienced on a global scale. Regardless to the futility of art as a vehicle to effect change, Vasan’s nihilistic art has from the outset dealt with the rapacious pursuit of materialistic wealth and power bought for the price of environmental, societal, and spiritual decimation. In Obsessive Compulsive, Vasan looks at the humanity’s cyclical psychosis, and how we are doomed in our propensity to repeat acts of aggression, cruelty, and destruction.
Often resolving a canvas in a frenetic burst of energy, Vasan works in the manner of an expressive painter, with gestural strokes akin to the techniques of Post-impressionist painter Van Gogh. Stylistically, he vies towards satirical caricature in the vein of early 20th century German artists George Grosz and Otto Dix, while many of his themes find commonality in the provocative cinema of the late German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
