Prasong Luemuang 2007

Exhibition by Prasong Luemuang

February 15th - March 15th, 2008

Prasong Luemuang’s very first paintings from 2530 to 2531 were works that brought recognition to subject matters of heaven and Buddhism, inspiring the new wave of up and coming painters. His paintings illustrate the essence of human beings and their nature, told through very ordinary subjects such as villages. However, the artist transforms these villages into grabbing spectacles, often times satirizing beliefs of fate and destiny, as can be seen in collections such as “Writing From Village”, “Naam-thip-Pla Thong”, and “Sampara Nai Chiwit”. In each collection, Prasong Luemuang introduces every single element, from human beings, animals and things, compiling them together to explain the world in its entirety. With time, the Prasong Luemuang collection in 2528 has led to another perspective that enquires with greater depth, regarding the meaning of life. Examining the details of his paintings and comparing them to his previous works clearly reveal Prasong’s development and transformation. The reasons for this might be the artist’s increased seriousness towards life, self-knowledge, self-evaluation, prayer, seeing life from new perspectives and leaving behind beliefs of fate and destiny. This has pushed his “Buddho, Thammo, Sangko” collection into the limelight, as it’s one of the most outspoken works pertaining to life and death.

In his paintings of visages such as the “Techoksin” collection (2548) or the “K.Kon” collection (2549-2550), Prasong intended for the faces to be interpreted as either faces of a person, of the Buddha or a mask. Certainly, specific letters of words, signatures, and dates on the paintings have reduced the severity of confrontations and at the same time serve as a strategy in forcing the audience to find and interpret with more depth, the artist’s inner workings. Prasong’s “Than Ouan” (2550) collection is a series of 10 large paintings of 260 x 550 centimeters each and is a continuation of the “Buddho, Thammo, Sangko” collection. However the subject matters differ completely from one another. While “Buddho, Thammo, Sangko” stands between life and death, “Than Ouan” instead, laughs and mocks at the reality of it all.
